The following is an alphabetical listing of the Glossary of Terms used throughout the Cats System. Click on one of the letters above to view terms starting with that letter.
The ACB Action date refers to the date that the Automated Clearing Bureau was instructed by the user to process the transaction to the specified account.
The trace number allocated by ACB.
The ACB user code allocated by ACB.
Enter the name of the creditor whose bank account will be credited.
Enter the name of the debtor whose bank account will be debited.
Enter the bank account number of the Creditor at the specified Banking Institution and Branch.
Enter the bank account number of the Debtor at the specified Banking Institution and Branch.
The date on which the transaction becomes effective, i.e. the date on which the account is being debited or credited.
The Action date refers to the value date on which the batch will be processed. This may be a business date up to 60 days in advance. Enter the Action date in the format YYYYMMDD.

The All Transactions option allows you to access details of all transactions (both debit and credit) that have been posted to a Current account linked to your profile. If you selected to view All Transactions you have the option to display Opening and closing balances. Click on the check box if you wish to view Opening and Closing balances for the Account that you are going to select. Up to 65 business days history information is available.
Enter the range of 'From' and 'To' amounts. You may enter the 'From' amount and leave the 'To' field blank. This will show all amounts greater than the amount entered.
The total amount of the Stop Order in Rands and cents.

This reflects when a creditor / debtor or batch has been authorised to allow a change.
This status reflects after an audit report has been printed.
This allows you to 'unlock' a batch to make changes.
Funds that can be transacted on.
Enter a description relating to the transfer, e.g. Funding of account. A maximum of 30 alpha-numeric characters may be entered.
Enter a reference that will be meaningful to you. If the batch description is not entered, the system will generate the description in the format: User ID/Date/Time.
This status will only reflect if the batch has been imported and there are errors that should be corrected before the batch is processed.
A Batch Reference is automatically generated by the Cats System, upon acceptance of the batch header. The Batch Reference is in the format of the Julian date (year and day of the year) and a three digit sequence number from 001 to 999.
A beneficiary refers to the account to which funds are paid, (e.g. companies and private individuals).
The account number of the beneficiary.
The full name of the beneficiary's bank.
The branch of the beneficiary's bank.
The full name of the account holder or person / company to be paid.
Enter the your account number issued by the creditor. This will be validated against the CDI number.
Refers to the party to which the payment is being made.
Enter the six digit branch code (first six digits of the eight digit code), which applies to the Banking Institution and Branch where the Creditor conducts their banking account.

Refers to the Company Directory Index number where information is held relating to the banking details of creditors that receive payments on a regular basis.These creditors have applied to be listed.
The cheque book that you have requested will be sent registered post to the address on your file for the specified account number. Approximately 10 days should be allowed for delivery.
The cheque number range applies only to the 'Debit' and 'All Transactions' options. Enter the required cheque number range. You may enter the 'From' Cheque No and leave the 'To' field blank. This will show all cheque numbers from the cheque number entered to the last cheque number appearing on your statement.
Identifies the class of transaction. Valid Class of Entry codes include:
Special Classes 10
Debit Transactions 21-59
Credit Transactions 61-97
The cheque book should be collected from the Branch where your account is held.
Enter the name of the person to be contacted regarding the Stop Order should the need arise.
The account that the funds are to be returned to.
The Creditor code is used as a short-cut to obtain the creditor's account information. A Creditor's code may contain a maximum of 16 characters. The code can be made up of alpha and or numeric characters.
The credits option allows you to access details of all credit transactions that have been posted to a Current account linked to your profile. Examples of credit transactions are Money Transfer credits, Deposits, Credit Interest.
Transactions must be processed within prescribed cut off times in order to receive value on the required date. Cut off times can be viewed in the following places:
1. The Help screens in the Own Transfers, Payments and Collections
options. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the
graphic to view the table;

2. The Operational Regulations under the 'Help' module in the system. Click on Functionality and scroll down to 2.2.7 Cut Off Times.
Enter the required 'From' and 'To' dates in the format YYYYMMDD. You may enter the 'From' date and leave the 'To' field blank. This will show all dates from the date entered to the current date.
The Debits option allows you to access details of all debit transactions that have been posted to a Current account linked to your profile. Examples of debit transactions are: Payments, Cheques, Money Transfer debits, Bank charges, Stop Orders, Debit Orders, Debit Interest.
The Debtor code is used as a short-cut to obtain the debtor's account information. A debtor's code may contain a maximum of 16 characters. The code can be made up of alpha and or numeric characters.
The EFTS Report reflects details of all transactions that are processed through the
EFTS Dated Service.
NOTE: This report is only available via the Cats System for three days, i.e. the day after
the batch has been released, for three business days. If a batch is released on a
Monday, this report may be printed the following Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Enter the date of the last payment of this stop order, in the format YYYYMMDD.
NOTE: An end date must be entered.
Refers to batches that have been released and the Final Audit Report printed.
A Final Audit Report is a report that can only be printed once the transaction batch has been processed by the SBSA mainframe computer, i.e. on, or after the Action Date. The Final Audit Report is your proof of payment, therefore ensure that these are filed for reference purposes.
The Final Audit Report provides proof of the payments that passed through the Cats System to the EFTS Dated Service for processing. This report can only be printed once the payment run has been released. The Final Audit Report can be downloaded after the batch status changes to 'Final Audit to be Downloaded'. NOTE: The EFTS Report must be printed for the Value Dated Service as proof that the batch was processed by the EFTS Dated Service.
The Final Balance, also known as the Retro balance, is the final balance of the said business day, taking into consideration late entries which are posted to the account before certain cut-off times on the following business day.
Refers to how frequently the Stop Order should be paid, i.e. Monthly, Quarterly, Bi-annually or Annually.
The General Statement Reference is a description for the contra account and the receiving account. This defaults to the same description for all transactions in a batch.
The area displayed in the centre of the screen is known as the grid area. It is a table containing columns and rows, and data is displayed in this area. Not all screens contain a grid. Refer to the General Help for further information.
The account that the funds are intended for.
The details of the layout of the file, i.e. file specifications. This is used where the
details are to be captured using your existing software or SBSA's offline software. The
file specifications are available from Electronic Banking Division on request.

This reflects when there are not enough funds in the nominated account.
SSVS: The specified batch is audited according to the processing options, i.e. either a
Full, Partial or No Audit. A Full Audit reflects all transactions loaded to the
batch.A Partial Audit will reflect the errors or changes made to the batch.
Own Accounts: The specified batch is audited according to the processing options, i.e.
Audit or No Audit.
SSVS and Own Accounts: If an Interim Audit has already been printed or exported, only
amended transactions will be displayed.
If the processing option is set to No Audit, then printing of the Interim Audit is
optional
Value Dated: The Interim Audit Report is printed to verify a batch.
The system will not allow a payment batch to be released unless the Interim Audit Report
has been printed. Any errors within the selected batch will be
highlighted on the Interim Audit Report.
Refers to batches where an Interim Audit still needs to be printed and checked.
This refers to the limit that is allowed per transaction, for this credit account. If a limit is set for R100, individual transactions of no more than R100 will be allowed. An unlimited number of transactions will be allowed, provided they do not exceed R100 each and that the batch limit is not exceeded.

The Julian date is used within the batch reference. In the format YYYY NNN, where NNN is the number of days in the year for the date, i.e. from 001 to 365, e.g. 1999200001, where 1999 is the year, 200 is the day of the year (19 June), and 001 is the first batch for the day.
A method of payment code must be entered against each transactions record e.g. a method of payment '2' is to effect a credit transfer and '3' is payment by cheque. Note: only method of payment '2' may be used for debit transactions.
The nominated account can be one of the following:
A Current Account maintained at Standard bank, for the
processing of all unpaid and redirected transactions.
For Collections the Nominated account will be the account that
is credited with the total value of the transactions and the payee will be debited.
For Payments the Nominated account will be the account that is
debited with the total value of the transactions and the beneficiary will be credited.
Refers to the Current Account to which transactions connected with the magnetic tape service will be posted.
If the Batch type is a debit, the Nominated account will be the account that is credited with the total value of the transactions. If the Batch type is a credit, the Nominated account will be the account that is debited with the total value of the transactions. Enter or select the nominated account. Once the nominated account has been entered, the Bank branch code and name will be displayed.
An Option resides within a Sub-Module and allows you access to a screen which contains Action/Buttons. The available Options will be displayed in another drop-down menu when you select the required Sub-module. For example, if you select Current Accounts, the following drop-down menu will be displayed, containing the available Options within the Current Account Sub-Module. To select an Option click the mouse on the required Option that is displayed in the drop-down menu. The Option that you selected will be displayed. Where an arrow is not displayed on the right hand side of a Sub-module, this indicates that the Sub-module contains only one Option. When you select such a Sub-module you will be taken directly into the Option, i.e. a further drop-down menu will not be displayed.
This status reflects if there are insufficient funds in the account. It means that some transactions were allowed to be processed as some funds were available.
This status reflects when a user requires more than one signatory to release.
The date of the previous statement will be displayed in the date field.
This refers to batches that have already been released and processed
A statement containing the transactions that have been posted to the account since the last statement was printed by the bank.
The account to which funds have been redirected.
The transaction number.
The reference number, or policy number relating to the Stop Order.
When a batch is released by the Operator, this allows the SBSA mainframe computer to process the batch. Only Operators with the authorised release level will be allowed to access the release option. If the release level of the Operator is less than the release level required to release a batch, then batch status will change to 'Partially Released'. Additional operator(s) will then need to release the batch. If the Operator has the required release level to release the batch, or complete the release of a partially released batch, the batch status will change to 'Released' and the batch will be processed.
This status reflects once a batch has been processed. The batch will process but funds have not been transferred yet. The funds will only be available on the action date.
The request number is allocated when viewing transaction details on the Current Account - Transaction Details screen. You may use the request number at a later stage, from the Current Account - Transaction Details Request screen to view the request again. Requests are automatically deleted from the system at the end of each day.
A service fee is a charge levied by the branch where your accounts are conducted, on the transactions that are put through your account.
Enter the date of the particular statement that you wish to view, in the format YYYYMMDD.
Enter the statement number to view details of a specific statement number.
Enter the date of the first payment of this Stop Order, in the format YYYYMMDD.
Enter a starting period in the format YYYYMM. This is the date that that your stop order will begin.
A unique number allocated to a particular statement.
Enter the required statement number range. You may enter the 'From' Statement No and leave the 'To' field blank. This will show all statements from the number entered to the current statement.
Enter a reference relating to the payment. A maximum of 30 alpha-numeric characters may be entered. For Creditor Profiles, the statement reference will be displayed as the narrative on the creditor's bank statement.
Enter a reference relating to the collection. A maximum of 30 alpha-numeric characters may be entered. For Debtor Profiles, the statement reference will be displayed as the narrative on the debtor's bank statement.
Enter a reference relating to the transfer. A maximum of 30 alpha numeric characters may be entered. For Single Transfers, the statement reference will be displayed on the selected account statement, i.e. on either the 'From' account or the 'To' account statement. For Batch Transfers, the statement reference for the batch header will be displayed on the nominated account statement. The statement reference for the transactions will be displayed on the statement for the account number that was entered when adding or modifying a transaction.
This status indicates which stage of the process the transaction is in.
This refers to the date on which the transaction was returned by ACB.
Enter the description for the sub-batch. If the Sub-batch description is not entered, the system will generate the description in the format: Batch reference / D or C. (D for debit batch and C for credit batch). e.g. 1996088001D
The Sub-batch type is either a Debit or Credit entry. If the Sub-batch type is a debit, the Nominated account will be the account that is credited with the total value of the transactions. If the Sub-batch type is a credit, the Nominated account will be the account that is debited with the total value of the transactions.
A Sub-Module resides within a Module and comprises of one or more Options. Certain Sub-Modules, however, do not contain Options, but comprise of Actions only. To select a Module click on the required icon. The Sub-Modules within the selected Module will be displayed.The right arrow that is displayed on the right hand side of certain Sub-modules, indicates that the Sub-module contains more than one Option, e.g. Current Accounts contains six Options. Where an arrow is not displayed on the right hand side of a Sub-module, this indicates that the Sub-module contains only one Option, e.g. When you select such a Sub-module you will be taken directly into the Option, i.e. a further drop-down menu will not be displayed. To select a Sub-Module click on the required Sub-module that is displayed in the drop-down menu. The Options within the selected Sub-Module will be displayed.
The total value that the financial institution has returned to the Nominated account for the specified action date.
The amount relating to a particular batch transaction in Rands and cents.
The amount to be transferred.
A transaction number is a 5 digit code that is automatically generated by the system for each transaction that is captured for a batch.
A transaction type is a code associated with a particular transaction. Valid codes are:
B - BILLS
DEP - DEPOSITS
DV - DIVIDENDS
EC - ERRORS CORRECTED
CATR - Cats TRANSFERS
IN - INTERESTS
PT - PAYMENTS
TR - TRANSFERS
UN - UNPAID ITEMS
The Transfer Description is an explanation chosen by the user can choose to identify why the batch was created, e.g., Bonuses - December.
The Transfer Reference is a system generated number made up of the Julian date and three sequential numbers.
This refers to the financial institution that returned the transaction.
An unpaid item is an electronic funds transfer item (magnetic tape item), that has been returned by the homing bank (either the receiver or payer's bank) for one of the following reasons: Payment Stopped, Account Closed, Not Provided For, Uncleared Effects, Refer to Drawer etc.
Contains an explanation of the transactions. The entire field is printed on the account holders bank statement. The first ten characters of the user reference contain the User's abbreviated name.
The date the account receives the value of the transaction. This date will be used for interest calculation.
This status reflects when a creditor / debtor / batch is locked preventing further changes to that batch. A batch with a status of 'Verified' can now be released. Depending on the processing options that have been set-up, it may be necessary to first run an Interim Audit report before a batch can be 'Verified'.
